While I’m a believer in the promise of HR tech to make us all more productive, and to attract and help retain the best candidates, I thought his experience was illustrative of how candidate experience affects culture â€" and how it can damage your brand’s reputation. So a short tale of candidate experience with a well known (unnamed) brand, and then I’ll move on to five things you can do to improve candidate experience, as seen through the lens of the 2013 Candidate Experience Awards (also known as the CandEs). My friend, who’s very well connected in the local technology community, was contacted by a former colleague who works for a well known software brand. Come join us, his friend said. We have the perfect job for you. Call the recruiter. Here’s her number, I’ve spoken to her, she seems really great to work with. So my friend called. The recruiter didn’t engage him in a discussion, and she wasted no time instructing him to go through the online job application process. He did, but the online application lacked functionality for him to add the information that he’d been referred in by an employee and was not mobile friendly for starts. He uploaded his resume anyway, a few days after this occurred. More time was wasted of course. That was a month ago, and he’s yet to receive a response from the company that his information was received â€" let alone â€" feedback on his qualifications. Sadly, this appears to be a trend â€" a recent HireRight survey shows 77 percent of applicants never hear back from the company to which they’ve applied, which is a shocking and sad number. Needless to say, my friend has removed that company from his short list of interesting employers. He’s also contemplating posting a review of the experience on GlassDoor. Even if the recruiter felt it wasn’t a good fit, the experience my friend had with the company could have been handled much more effectively. The brand has been damaged in a way that will be difficult to repair. So what does it take to ensure you create a workplace culture that supports positive candidate experience for all candidates, both good fits and near-misses? Let’s look at the 2013 Candidate Experience Awards for some clues. This is the third annual CandEs, and the turnout was impressive â€" more than 130 companies registered for the awards competition, 122 filled out the survey, and 46,000 candidate responses were captured. 5 Ways to Improve Candidate Experience and Become a Contender for a CandE Award: Communicate: If a candidate calls you, fills out a job application or sends in a resume, respond quickly and clearly. Return the call, even if it’s just to say ‘Thanks for your interest’ or ‘We’d appreciate it if you’d visit our jobs site’. If you interview a candidate, give them feedback. Candidates are probably part of your company’s ecosystem or community. If you don’t manage communications, you may find your rankings on sites like GlassDoor dropping. Set expectations: Tell candidates what the process is, what the cadence of communications will be, and how fast the process will be. Et’s face it, you know this stuff. Why keep it shrouded in mystery? It makes the company look unapproachable. It makes you look like a barrier, not a recruiter. It makes the brand look bad. Make your employees part of the recruiting team: People who like their jobs and like the company they work for want their friends to join the team. Don’t be like the recruiter in the example above â€" show your employees respect and treat their referrals seriously and courteously. If you don’t you may find retention becomes an issue. Personalize your recruiting processes: Hiring good candidates is a process, and processes need to be fully conceptualized. You need to have content artifacts for each stage of the recruiting process, from thank-you messages to information about why it’s a great decision to work for your company. Think about the positions you’re recruiting for, the levels and the experience you’re seeking, and tailor content and messages to sustain candidates’ interest throughout the process. Ask for feedback: Consumer brands are always asking their customers for feedback to improve products, the shopping experience and to build loyalty. Recruiting is really no different. Think of your candidates as consumers of your company’s products and services, and take their feedback into account as you’re reviewing your processes. You won’t always like what you hear, of course, but you’ll have the tools to improve your candidate experience. Candidate experience matters. People who consider applying to your company are interested in more than a job â€" they’re interested in being part of your workplace culture and brand. So this is the sixth year were doing the Creative Trends Report, and essentially what it is is we are predicting through data, are those trends that are going to influence creative direction and design aesthetics in 2017 across the board in images, videos, and music. And the way we go about doing that is by taking our billions of searches that happen on our website every year, all the downloads that happen and really start to crunch that data and understand what it is that is sort of starting to trend. So were not just looking at necessarily whats the most popular downloads, but were looking at the various keywords that are being looked for that are more popular this year than they were last year and dramatically so. And what that is able to do is were able to then predict whats going to become hotter in 2017. So for example, last year, one of our trends was flat lay, which most people can identify. Its that looking straight down, things organized neatly kind of aesthetic that you see across social media. So we saw that starting to trend even before it got gigantic last year, and actually saw it evolve a little bit even more this year. What are the four global trends for this year? 1. White texture This is the one that we saw the biggest spike on, and the way that were defining that is really adding a three-dimensional feel to imagery. So if you can imagine the texture of paper, or a paper folder, or even white paint on a surface that has these ridges, shadows, etc, which really give things a little bit more dimension than where weve come from. And the best way we think about that too is almost an evolution of what we saw last year with material design, which was a term coined by Google, which really looked at that flat interface that had been popular for so many years and starting to give it dimensionality, adding shadows, things that you can almost reach out and touch. And we saw that extend this year with this texture. So these white  texture imagery, things that people can then apply to their designs and make them feel a little bit more tactile, really spiked this year. 2. Halftone Any magazine you see or newspaper, what youre seeing in any image on those various printed pieces are really made up by tiny little dots, sometimes a little bit more evident than others. So thats called the dot pattern and also a halftone. And thats what we saw spiking this year too, which was really kind of interesting. Its again, very much like white texture. Its almost adding that little bit more of an organic feel to some of the communications that were seeing being generated. And perhaps it is reflective of almost nostalgic for a simpler time when printed newspapers and posters were much more important than the 24/7 digital news world that were in now. Heads-up display Which for those who dont know what that is, its actually really the integration of data into the physical environment in a way. So you may have seen it on race cars where the various instruments on the dashboard, the speedometers, that are projected up on the window itself, on the windshield. So you can actually see all that information and you can see through it as well. So its really this integration of digital data into our worlds, which is very interesting. And I think its somewhat reflective of how technology has more and more become incorporated into our everyday lives with things like Nest thermostats for example. This integration, I think, is really getting people to really muse about whats going to be interesting in the future, and where are we going with technology. 4. Emojis I dont think well ever get rid of them, but this is actually interesting, because emojis was a trend two years ago and then its come back this year. And it’s come back big time. So were seeing a 328% increase in the number of searches and downloads for emojis this year. It was a couple of years ago when it was starting to trend that it became much more mainstream, where we started seeing huge brands, global brands such as Pepsi starting to use emojis in a really meaningful way, where they had added emojis onto Pepsi cans last summer. And I think because of that, its also introduced that idea of emojis into a broader audience. So its no longer just the younger generation, but now youre starting to see their parents and everybody else using emojis and everyone sort of piling on top that. And at the same time, of course, were seeing social media channels just really kind of at war with each other as far as who can make their various channels much more interesting. So incorporating int o emojis and other augmented reality elements into Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. I think all those things are really driving emojis forward. A Georgetown Center for Education and the Workforce paper says that by 2020, 65 percent of all jobs in the economy will require post secondary education and training beyond high school. They break it down like this: 35 percent of the job openings will require at least a bachelor’s degree; 30 percent of the job openings will require some college or an associate’s degree; and 36 percent of the job openings will not require education beyond high school. That’s a big change in just one generation. Jobs that used to be available to people without degrees are now requiring degrees â€" or at least preferring them. For example, in 1970, less than 5 percent of firefighters held a college degree, but by 2010, the share had jumped to 18 percent.  When employers can choose to hire administrative assistants, firefighters, shipping clerks, or bartenders with a degree, they will. Eventually, candidates without college degrees will fall to the second tier, less likely to be hired. Economists call this trend degree inflation, and it’s causing undesirable consequences for both employers and workers. One problem for companies is that degree inflation also leads to wage inflation. College graduates have debt, and they expect to make more money based on their credentials. And frankly, they seldom perform better than their high school graduate peers. That’s because a college degree doesn’t teach you much about how to perform a middle skills job; the college graduate will usually require the same amount of training and oversight as a high school graduate. The other problem companies have is that college-educated workers tend to move on to better positions more quickly. They are less likely to stay in jobs that don’t challenge them or live up to their expectations. Turnover is expensive, and the company finds replacing workers difficult once the degree becomes a requirement. Workers from a different generation, who might have years of experience but no degree, are locked out of applying for jobs they used to hold and would presumably perform well. For workers, the commoditization of the 4-year degree means that their (considerable) investment in education is losing its value. Soon, as more and more jobseekers obtain degrees simply to qualify for entry-level jobs, the college degree will not provide any advantage in the job market. The starter jobs that will be offered to college graduates will not pay enough to service their debt, creating a generation of workers who don’t earn enough to live independently or save for their future. Joseph B. Fuller, a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School, published a report in partnership with consulting firm Accenture called  â€œDismissed by Degrees: How degree inflation is undermining U.S. competitiveness and hurting America’s middle class.” The report finds that nearly 6 million jobs are at risk of degree inflation. The report cites specific requirements that will create severe qualified worker shortages if not corrected. For example: In an analysis of more than 26 million job postings, we found that the degree gap (the discrepancy between the demand for a college degree in job postings and the employees who are currently in that job who have a college degree) is significant. For example, in 2015, 67% of production supervisor job postings asked for a college degree, while only 16% of employed production supervisors had one.” Fuller’s report says that degree inflation is fueled in part by employers’ use of degrees as “a proxy for a candidate’s range and depth of skills.” In other words, they use the degree to stand in for good verbal and written communication skills, critical thinking, and time management. But the results don’t bear that out. The report says “While a majority of employers pay between 11% and 30% more for college graduates, many employers also report that non-graduates with experience perform nearly or equally well on critical dimensions like time to reach full productivity, time to promotion, level of productivity, or amount of oversight required.” I’m not sure if we can stop the trend, since high schools (and parents) have been promoting college degrees for decades as the only path to career success â€" even for students who are not well suited to university-level work. When you see a janitorial job listed requiring a college degree, you’ll know we’ve reached peak crisis. And your floors won’t be any cleaner than they were in 1970.

It is where all ten people who listen to it go to hear hipsters talk about music, musicals played on an ‘ironic’ comedy show, and, inevitably, hear hipster musicals. The very same presenters might even put on local club nights, DJ at student union events, or be behind the music you hear in the SU building. But surely sitting behind a mic every week playing the latest Kanye West album on loop can’t lead to a decent job? Actually, student radio can give you a massive head-start. The transferable skills for your CV alongside what can also be the most enjoyable parts of your university experience are difficult to develop to the same extent elsewhere. Here are just some of the unique selling points student radio can provide. It teaches you how to network The dreaded word: networking. I can hear you shuddering at the mere thought of going to networking events, totally overwhelmed and intimidated by the big-wigs of the industry you’re interested in. “How do I approach someone?”, “What do I even say!?”. Experience in radio, however, can help you tackle this situation with considerably more confidence (because, let’s be honest, no-one really likes networking). It is a real skill to be able to talk to people efficaciously, especially when you don’t know them, but radio is a crash-course in how to communicate. As a reporter on a news team, for example, you’ll have to approach fellow students or members of the public for vox-pops to go on the show. You will be using a mini-elevator pitch to try and convince them to give you the audio you need. The networks available that you can take advantage of in student radio are there. While I was Head of Sport at FreshAir.org.uk, Edinburgh’s student radio station, I made a huge effort to get my team covering as many professional sports as possible. This meant talking to PR people at huge clubs, as well as managers and players for interviews. All of this helps you to develop that crucial skill of having a rapport with someone naturally, something you can take to any industry. Industry connections Take a look at the Student Radio Association’s alumni. Established to support student radio, extraordinary talents such as Radio 1’s Greg James have been recognised at the annual SRA Awards. The awards themselves are incredibly competitive, but the people that you meet and who hear your entries really are the peak of the media industry. The right person listening to your demo at the right time could lead to a start in radio. In addition, the SRA also put on Regional Training Days every term where industry professionals provide workshops and advice. Take advantage of these opportunities, and never forget that the students sat next to you could be great contacts in the future, and employers are always impressed by a strong contacts book. This isn’t just restricted to the media industry. Say you want a job in the arts, or in business. If you structure your show around interviews and packages where you go out and meet the people involved, and you keep in contact with them, opportunities can easily come from that very same person who chatted to you for ten minutes in your second year. Communication This seems an obvious one, but it is a skill that radio develops arguably more than any other. The ability to concisely describe a song or an album, or to introduce a special guest, or to ask the right question and have it understood, is not easy. Listen to the best in the business on the BBC or LBC and you’ll hear some of the best communicators in the country. Listen to local radio, and you can hear that even paid professionals often struggle to communicate perfectly. As a student involved in student radio, you will have a huge head-start over other applicants for jobs which feed off good communication skills. Sales, HR, PR and Communications (the clue is in the name with that one) and many others are desperate for people who can communicate well. Teamwork This can often be a cliché. ‘I work well in a team and by myself’ is a pre-requisite for any job, and while some are better at it than others everyone will have some level of experience in both. Therefore, it is crucial to stand out from the crowd. Student radio is a collaborative effort. The unsung technicians will keep the station running by all means necessary (don’t get me started on the great mixing desk meltdown of 2014…), while the station manager will rely on their committee to run training, organise social events, and keep the station financially secure. FreshAir, for example, had a committee of 20, each one of us working together as a team to provide the best radio we could. Doing an outside broadcast, where you broadcast live from somewhere other than the studio, can provide a real-life example of teamwork. In those situations, nothing can go wrong. Tech must work perfectly and in sync with presenters and producers, all of whom are working together but with independent roles simultaneously. With student radio on your CV and the skills you gain clearly highlighted with examples clearly in interviews or on job applications, mucking about with your mates on student radio really can provide you with a ticket to your dream job.
